GEORGE TOWN, GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS – Boise State put together a dominant performance Tuesday evening, getting the edge in every statistical category along with some outstanding individual efforts to claim a 72-52 victory over St. Bonaventure in the second round of the Cayman Islands Classic at John Gray Gym.
Derrick Alston led the scoring parade with 22 points on 6-for-9 shooting as the Broncos (2-2) hit 58.1 percent from the field. Justinian Jessup had 19 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals, hitting four of Boise State’s 13 3-pointers as the Mountain West squad connected on 13-of-24 from downtown for 54.2 percent.
Rayshaun Williams also reached double figures for the Broncos with 10 on 5-for-7 shooting, and grabbed eight rebounds.
Boise State owned a 35-20 edge in rebounds, a 16-5 lead in assists and shot 90 percent (9-for-10) at the free throw line. The only statistic that leaned toward St. Bonaventure was forcing Boise into 21 turnovers.
The Bonnies (1-4) got a pair of 20-point games, led by Jalen Poyser’s 22 as he was 4-for-7 from long range and 8-for-9 at the free throw line. Kyle Lofton hit for 20 points. St Bonaventure managed just 32.1 percent (17-for-53) from the field including 5-for-17 (29.4 percent) from 3-point range.
The lead was just six points at halftime as Boise was up 30-24, but that changed quickly as Boise State opened the second half with a 21-0 run for a 51-24 lead, the largest margin of the game. A 3-pointer out of the gate by Alston made it nine points and Williams hit a jumper to push it to double figures at 35-24.
After that, St. Bonaventure’s closest look at the leader was 17 points at 67-50 with 3:42 to play on two Poyser free throws.
St. Bonaventure will open Wednesday’s play with an 11 a.m. contest against Akron for seventh place. Boise State will meet Illinois State in the fifth place game at 1:30 p.m.
