GEORGE TOWN, GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS -- Tournament officials have announced that the 2021 Cayman Islands Classic basketball tournament has been postponed until 2022.
“The Cayman Islands Government has been successful in containing Covid-19. However, due to the existing travel restrictions, the conditions are still not conducive to host the tournament in 2021. Unfortunately, we have to postpone this year's event,” said Joe Wright, Chief Executive Officer for Caymax Sports Ltd.
“We completely support the Government’s decisions,” said Victor O'Garro, president of Caymax Sports Ltd. “We look forward to the teams and fans returning to a mask free Island in 2022. We have had three successful tournament years and we look forward to another great lineup of competitive teams for 2022.”
The eight-team Cayman Islands Classic will resume play Nov. 21-23 2022 with six teams already under contract to participate: LSU, Kansas State, Illinois State, Nevada, Tulane and Western Kentucky.
Cincinnati won the inaugural Cayman Islands Classic in 2017, while Creighton captured the 2018 tournament title. In 2019, George Mason defeated New Mexico State to clinch the championship title.
