GEORGE TOWN, GRAND CAYMAN — Senior guard Jarod Lucas scored a season-high 22 points, including 14 in the second half, to rally Nevada to a 75-66 victory against Tulane in the first round of the Cayman Islands Classic Monday evening.
The undefeated Wolf Pack (5-0) advances to the semifinal round at 7:30 p.m. eastern time Tuesday, playing the winner of Monday's final game between Rhode Island and Kansas State.
"I'm really proud of the guys and how they battled," said Nevada coach Steve Alford. "That's a real good Tulane team. I thought we did a lot of good things in the second half."
Sophomore guard Jalen Cook tallied a season-high 24 points for Tulane which slipped to 3-1.
Senior forward Tre Coleman scored 13 points for Nevada.
Senior guard Kenan Blackshear, who earlier this season had a triple-double, added 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Wolf Pack.
"Blackshear is an unselfish player and he is a unique player because he is a 6-6, 225-pound point guard who made some real good plays," Alford added. "He had really good decision-making tonight."
There were nine ties and six lead changes in the game before the Wolf Pack went on a 10-2 run to turn a 57-56 advantage into a 67-58 advantage.
Nevada overcame cold outside shooting at 38.6 percent (17-44) by making 31 of 38 free throws.Tulane hit just 37.5 percent from the floor, making 24 of 64 shots.
Sophomore guard Sion James played a solid floor game for Tulane with 15 points and a game-high six steals.
The waning minutes turned into a free throw marathon with Nevada scoring its last eight points at the free throw line, while Tulane's last seven points also were from the charity stripe.
