GEORGE TOWN, GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS— Junior forward Trinity Townsend scored 18 points, including a pivotal hook shot with 23 seconds left, to carry Oakland to a 74-69 victory past Loyola Marymount in the consolation round of the Cayman Islands Classic Monday afternoon.
Oakland (2-3) will play the winner of the Marshall-Florida International game for fifth-place in the tournament at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Scoring 11 unanswered points during a 3:23 span, the Golden Grizzlies constructed a 58-38 lead with 15:20 left in the second half.
Loyola Marymount responded with a 9-0 run to pull within 70-69 with 49.1 seconds left following two free throws by Will Johnston.
That set the stage for Townsend’s heroics. Johnson missed a jumper with 18 seconds remaining for LMU, while Rocket Watts hit two free throws with 12 seconds left to account for the final margin.
Guard Jack Gohlke added 18 points for Oakland, nailing five three-point baskets.Townsend grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for Oakland which out rebounded LMU, 37-33.
Johnston finished with a game-high 22 points for LMU, hitting four three-point baskets.
The Golden Grizzlies shot 57.7 percent en route to a 44-35 halftime advantage, finishing the game hitting 42.4 percent (25-59). LMU shot 39.6 percent (21-53).
