GEORGE TOWN, GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS – Joshua Beadle icily stuck a 3-pointer with just two seconds to play to lift Boston College to a stunning 63-61 victory over Boise State Tuesday night in the championship game of the sixth annual Cayman Islands Classic.
It took a determined effort for Boston College (6-1) to run its winning streak to six consecutive games after Boise State had led for nearly the entire game. The Broncos (5-2) saw their four-game win streak snapped.
Beadle, a graduate student, finished with 13 points, his game-winning 3-pointer the lone bomb he made in the game, one of just two the Eagles managed from long distance in the game (2-for-12). Graduate center Chad Venning led BC with 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting, along with a game-best seven rebounds. Sophomore Elijah Strong added 11 points and six rebounds.
Boise State had moved on top 61-60 on two free throws by senior point guard Alvaro Cardenas with 12.2 seconds remaining. The Broncos were led in the scoring column by Javan Buchanan with 24 points. Cardenas finished with 11 points, three assists and three steals, while senior Tyson Degenhart added 10 points.
The first half never saw separation of more than five points, which reflected Boise State’s largest lead three times. The biggest edge held by Boston College during the initial 20 minutes was a three-point difference, 26-23, late in the half. A 3-pointer by Boise State’s Julian Bowie sent the squads to the break knotted up.
In the second half, BC jumped to a quick five-point lead but Buchanan spearheaded a 12-2 run by Boise State to push the Broncos on top by eight at 48-40. Buchanan scored half of the points in that stretch.
Boise’s largest lead came with 8:27 to play when Buchanan made two free throws to push the margin to 54-45.
Boston College responded with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to wipe out the deficit and take a 56-54 lead. Roger McFarlane, who finished with nine points, scored seven of the points in that run.
With BC owning a 60-55 lead, Boise State six consecutive points, all from the free throw line to retake the lead on Cardenas’ pair with 12 seconds left. The Eagles moved the ball across midcourt and called a timeout with 5.6 ticks to go, then ran a play that gave Beadle a clean look for his game-winning heroics.
BC shot 56.5 percent in the second half, finishing with 49 percent accuracy (25-for-51) for the game. Boise State shot 47 percent in the second half, but only 39 percent for the game (20-for-51).
