GEORGE TOWN, GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS –Bobby Pettiford made a floating jump shot with 10 seconds remaining and Trae Benham drained both ends of a 1-and-1 with two seconds left to lift High Point to a slim, 76-73 victory over Hampton Tuesday afternoon in the fifth place game at the Cayman Islands Classic.

Hampton (3-4) had grabbed a 73-72 edge with just 26 seconds left on a step-back jumper by Noah Farrakhan to set the stage for the late drama from High Point (6-1).

George Beale Jr. had a chance to tie the game as the buzzer sounded, pulling up just across mid-court for a clean look at the long shot, but it was off target.

Junior forward Kimani Hamilton was the High Point high scorer with 18 points, bolstered by a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Senior guard Trae Benham came off the bench and drained all four of his 3-point tries and went 5-for-5 at the free throw line to finish with 17 points. Senior guard Kezza Giffa added 11 points.

Beale was the top point-getter for Hampton, finishing with 17, while Farrakhan had 16. True freshman Eunique Rink chipped in a career-high eight poits for the Pirates along with five rebounds.

A primary reason Hampton challenged right down to the buzzer was the way the Pirates protected the ball. Hampton made just three turnovers in the game, and had a 14-2 advantage in points off turnovers. The Pirates forced 11 High Point turnovers.

High Point led the entire first half, getting an early eight-point lead. Hampton closed to within one in the opening period but never caught up.

The High Point lead floated in single digits to open the second half before Hampton claimed its first lead of the contest on a 3-pointer from Farrakhan with 6:14 to play to make it 59-58. Benham’s three free throws put High Point back on top, where they stayed until Farrakhan’s trey with 26 seconds remaining.
