McGill, Reynolds Carry Florida Over Georgia Tech By Nine

GEORGE TOWN, GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS – Sophomore guard Liv McGill, the nation’s third-leading scorer, was at it again Saturday night, pouring in 27 points to propel the Florida Gators (8-1) to a nine-point, 65-56 victory over Georgia Tech (3-5) on the final day of the Cayman Islands Classic in John Gray Gymnasium.

McGill finished the contest with 27 points, including a 13-of-14 effort at the free throw line. She added six assists, three rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots. Another sign of her worth in the contest, she didn’t commit a foul and drew 10 GT fouls. 
 
Laila Reynolds was the only other Florida player to score in double figures with 13 points. Me’Arah O’Neal added nine points and seven rebounds.
 
Georgia Tech had three players in double figures in the losing cause. Savannah Samuel led the way with 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Talayah Walker added 11 points and seven rebounds. Catherine Alben finished with 10 points.
 
Georgia Tech went 0-for-11 from 3-point range and finished the game shooting 34.8 percent overall (24-for-69). The Yellow Jackets had 22 offensive rebounds and held a 46-37 edge on the glass, which translated to a 20-4 advantage in second chance points.  
 
Georgia Tech used a 16-10 advantage in rebounds in the first quarter to forge a slim 16-14 lead. Little was settled before halftime, but Florida outscored the Yellow Jackets 18-8 in the second quarter to claim a 28-24 lead at the break. Georgia Tech was held to 25 percent shooting in the second stanza, going 3-for-12.
 
A 14-4 stretch in the third quarter is what allowed Florida to build a 14-point lead through three quarters, heading to the final period on top by a 46-32 count.
 
Georgia Tech slashed the difference down to six points on two occasions in the fourth quarter, the final time at 54-48 with 2:38 remaining on a basket by Samuel. Florida took it back to double figures and was able to protect it to the final horn.
