Three Unbeatens In Five-Team Cayman Classic Field 11/28/2024 2:00:00 PM GEOREGE TOWN, GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS – Basketball fans are in for a treat over the next three days as some of the best women's college teams in the United States square off in the second annual Cayman Islands Women's Classic. The field includes Mississippi State, Notre Dame, South Florida, TCU and Utah, a lineup that has combined for a 26-4 record thus far this season. Mississippi State has rolled to a 6-0 record, and has won in convincing fashion. The Bulldogs are averaging 81 points per game while allowing a mere 42 points, a scoring margin of 39 points per game. They've done it with balanced scoring, with four players averaging between 11 and 14.8 points per game. Eniya Russell leads the way with 14.8 points per game. She has plenty of support. Madina Okot averages 11.7, followed by Jerkaila Jordan ad Debreasha Pow each chipping in 11 ppg. Notre Dame is also undefeated, bringing a 5-0 record to the tournament including a 74-61 upset win over USC in Los Angeles. The Fighting Irish have also left little doubt, averaging 92.8 points on offense and 56.2 on defense, a winning margin of 36 points per contest. Hannah Hidalgo has been unstoppable, averaging 24.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest. Likewise, opponents haven't solved Olivia Miles, as she averages 18.6 points and 8.0 rebounds. The Irish have had six players average in double figures. Joining Hidalgo and Miles are Liatu King (14.5 and 10.0), Kate Koval (11.8 and 11.8), Cassandre Prosper (10.2) and Sonia Citron (10.0). The University of South Florida has produced the same gaudy numbers as the other teams in the field, but the Bulls will be a team to deal with in Cayman. The Bulls are 4-3 overall, averaging 64 points per game while allowing 58.4, just a fraction more on defense than Notre Dame. Two USF players are averaging in double figures led by Sammie Puisis with 14.4 ppg. Vittoria Blasigh adds 10.6 points per game. The key to the USF offense has been point guard Mama Dembele, who averages 6.0 assists per game. Joining Mississippi State with the top record in the tournament is TCU at 6-0. Sedona Prince leads the charge, averaging 20.7 points and 9.7 rebounds, while also chalking up 23 blocked shots. Point guard Hailey Van Lith averages 19.2 points and has 42 assists. Also averaging in double figures for the Horned Frogs is Madison Conner with 15.8 points per game. Despite a mid-season coaching change, Utah is off to a solid 5-1 start. The Utes are under the direction of Gavin Petersen, a 20-year veteran of NCAA Division I coaching, who inherited the role after the season tipped off. He spent five seasons as Utah's associate head coach. Yet another team with amazing numbers, Utah is scoring 87 points per game and allowing 57, for a 30-point average margin. Giana Kneepkens is the top among five double figure contributors, averaging 17.3 points per contest. Maye Toure adds 14.7 points, Reese Ross averages 10.8, Jenna Johnson scores 10.2, Kennady McQueen is netting 10.7 per game. The tournament tips off Thursday with a single game at 7:30 p.m. ET as Utah meets Mississippi State. Friday's schedule features two games. Notre Dame faces TCU in the first skirmish between unbeatens, with tipoff at 5 p.m. Mississippi State meets USF at 7:30 p.m. Notre Dame meets Utah a5 5 p.m. to open play Saturday, while the tournament wraps up with a 7:30 p.m. clash between USF and TCU.
