Patient Miami Edges George Washington In Overtime

GEORGE TOWN, GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS – Miami had to fight back from a 15-point second half deficit and wait until overtime to gain an edge, but the Hurricanes took advantage of the extra session to claim an 83-77 victory over a stubborn George Washington squad Friday afternoon in the Cayman Islands Classic.

Miami improved to 5-1 while GW slipped to 2-5. The Hurricanes place No. 24 Oklahoma State Saturday at 11 a.m. ET while GW will face Charlotte at 1:30 p.m.  
 
The Hurricanes opened the overtime with an 8-0 run, the first six coming at the free throw line, and used that to secure the victory. Miami took advantage of the physical style of game, going to the charity stripe 40 times (27-for-40) compared with 14 free throw attempts (9-for-14) by GW.

Gal Raviv finished with a game-high 29 points to lead Miami while post player Ra Shaya Kyle added 26 points on 8-for-11 shooting along with 14 rebounds. Soma Okolo had 10 points and seven rebounds.
 
Gabby Reynolds contributed 27 points, four assists and three steals for George Washington, while Emma Theodorsson added 14 points and Mia James scored 12 with four assists. Caia Loving finished with nine points and a team-leading nine rebounds for the Revolutionaries. 

The contest was tied six times in the fourth period. Each time Miami tied the score, GW responded with points to regain a lead it had held since the early minutes of the game. 
 
The Hurricanes grabbed a 72-69 lead on a basket by Kyle with 1:06 remaining before Theodorsson drained a clutch 3-pointer with 49 second to play to set up the overtime.
 
George Washington flirted with a tiny lead for the first few minutes of the game before Miami moved on top 12-10 on a layup by Kyle with 1:30 left in the opening quarter. Eventually the Hurricanes constructed a six-point edge at 16-10, and closed the first period on top, 16-12.
 
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Mia James and Gabby Reynolds pulled GW back to an 18-18 tie in the first minute of the second quarter and the Revolutionaries slipped ahead 21-18 with 8:46 to play in the half on a 3-pointer by Theodorsson. 
 
GW inched forward to stake out a seven point lead, first at 30-23, and reclaimed that same margin four more times before heading into intermission with a 39-32 lead. A pair of telling numbers in the opening half showed Miami going 1-for-7 from long distance, and recording just one assist while GW had 10 helpers. The GW bench also had a 23-4 scoring advantage over the Miami bench.
 
A 3-pointer by Reynolds with 7:27 left in the third quarter game GW its first double-figure lead at 44-34 and they took it as large as 15 points, 52-37 at the 5:22 mark. 

Miami answered with a 9-0 run, with Kyle scoring six of the nine points.
